Water System
The City's Water Department is dedicated to providing safe, clean drinking water to the residents of St Johns. This department is responsible for installing new water lines as well as repairing and maintaining our existing water system.
The City has five (5) wells. The City pumps approximately one million gallons of water per day. The City's SCADA system has been extensively updated. The SCADA system monitors the wells 24/7 every day.
Our water is regulated by the State and phosphate, chlorine and flouride are added to it. Testing for chlorine levels are done twice a day and once a day for phosphate. The City tests for bacteria, per the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Standards, at six (6) different locations throughout the City twice a month. Flouride is added due to State and MIOSHA standards. The flouride levels are monitored daily to insure proper standards are achieved.
Chlorine levels are tested twice daily. Phosphate testing is done daily. Bacteria is tested at six (6) different sites throughout the City twice a month.
It is required that the City gather bacteria samples from all new construction mains.
Fire Hydrant Flushing
The City of St. Johns Water Department personnel flushes all fire hydrants in the City. The purpose is to insure that the hydrants are operable and also to clean the water mains of rust and sediment that develops over a period of time. During the process the water could become slightly colored; however, it should clear up shortly after the flushing. Flushing of the hydrants is done in spring and fall. Hydrant flushing will begin September 28, 2011 and will continue through mid-October.
Miss Dig
Before you dig - Call MISS DIG at 1-800-482-7171
Water, sewer, natural gas, electric, cable, fiber optic and other service lines are buried underground. State law requires that you call MISS DIG at 1-800-482-7171 at least three (3) working days before starting any project that involves digging.
MISS DIG will notify the utilities in your area, who will mark the location of the underground lines with flags or paint - for free - so you can avoid them.
Some of these lines may not be buried very deep, so even if you are just planting a tree or putting in a mailbox post, it's important to call.
If you will be digging anywhere near a marked area - especially if you are using power equipment - use a shovel and hand dig to expose the lines. This will prevent emergencies and unnecessary service interruptions to you and your neighbors.
Safe Drinking Water
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has primary enforcement authority in Michigan for the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act under the legislative authority of Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act.
