Bike Licenses
A bike license may be purchased for $3.00 at the St. Johns Police Department. The bike owner may either bring their bike to the department or have the information written down with regard to the model, color, serial number, wheel size and number of speeds. This information along with their name, address and telephone number is kept on file. It is a valuable tool to help identify the owner in the event the bike is recovered.

City Burn Permits
There are no burning permits issued to City residents. Residents may have a recreational fire, contained in a fire pit, and may not burn leaves or trash. You are not required to have a burn permit for recreational fires, but you may call and put your address on the list for safety purposes.

Township Burn Permits
Residents living in the east half of Bengal Township (Francis Rd. as the dividing line) may either call the St. Johns Police Department at 989-224-6721 or the St. Johns Fire Department at 989-224-2151 to request a burn permit. Permits cannot be given for manufactured materials, such as cardboard boxes, processed lumber, trash, tires, etc. Residents may burn leaves, tree limbs, garden waste, field materials, and ditch banks, etc.

Business Contact Information
It is recommended that new businesses in town fill out a form regarding key holder names and phone numbers and other pertinent information that police and fire should know in the event of an emergency. This information is kept confidential and is valuable to emergency personnel in the event of a fire, break-in, etc. when the business is closed and owners/managers need to be contacted. Form may be downloaded here and dropped off at the police department during normal business hours or sent by FAX to 989-224-2320. Also, in the event any information changes, please notify the department by calling 989-224-6721 during normal business hours or by resubmitting another form.

Emergency Operations Plan
The St Johns Police Department has prepared, trained and established a homeland security/emergency operating plan. This plan may be activated for weather related natural disasters or major accidents, in addition to national security issues. There is a plan on file at the Police Department. Funeral Escorts
Area funeral homes often request police assistance with traffic control from the church or funeral home to the cemetery. The funeral procession is given the right of way at intersections being manned by police personnel and other oncoming traffic is halted.

Lockouts
If a citizen has locked their keys in their vehicle and the vehicle is parked inside the city limits, they may request assistance from the police department. A call to 911 is required and a police officer will be dispatched to the location of the locked vehicle.

NSF/Account Closed Check Five-Day Notices
Businesses/residents who are written non-sufficient funds checks or account closed checks may obtain a five-day notice from the St. Johns Police Department. It is the responsibility of the receiver of the check to send the notice by certified mail. If further follow-up is necessary, please contact an officer.

Police Reports
In the event an individual is involved in an accident or is the victim of a crime, they may request a copy of their police report. The cost of obtaining the report is $5.00 and may be picked up at the St. Johns Police Department during normal business hours.

Preliminary Breath Test (PBT)
Individuals who are required to take a breath test may do so at the St. Johns Police Department. The cost for city residents is $3.00 and for non-city residents the cost is $4.00. A breath tube may also be purchased for $1.00 and it is recommended the individual bring the tube with them on return visits. Tests are administered seven days a week between 6:45-7:15 a.m. and 4:45-5:15 p.m. Tests are also administered Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Property Checks
When a resident is going to be gone for a period of time, they may call the St. Johns Police Department to have their property checked. Officers perform property checks and if there is a problem, the officer would call the contact person specified by the property owner. The property owner would also be asked for information regarding timers in the house, vehicles left in the garage/driveway, etc. and if anyone else is checking on the house for them.
