The City of St Johns Wastewater Treatment Facility has an average daily flow of 1.3 million gallons. We are classified as a Class “B” Facility with biological treatment. Utilizing Rotating Biological Contactors and Tertiary Filters, we achieve maximum results for our effluent treatment.
As with all wastewater treatment facilities, our waste product is sludge. Our sludge is conditioned and treated by using anaerobic digestion. Annually, we contract the transportation and application of our bio-solids into area farm fields for fertilization. This program is regulated by both the State of Michigan and the Environmental Protection Agency.
As the digester's contents are heated and mixed 24 hours/day, a methane gas is created. We then utilize this methane gas to fuel the heat exchangers/boilers, thus we provide heat to three buildings in the winter months.
Our effluent water is pumped through the plant and is used for chemical mixing, cooling pumps, washing building floors and vehicles and irrigation. We also allow contractors to use this water at no cost. Examples are lawn spraying, hydro-seeding and road cutting.
In addition to the upkeep and maintenance at the wastewater facility, the wastewater personnel are responsible for the routine cleaning of both the sanitary and storm collection systems. Our goal is to complete the cleaning of both systems within a two year schedule.
