Adopt-A-Park
This program is instituted to protect and enhance the St. Johns neighborhood parks through ongoing volunteer support and to educate residents of St. Johns about the importance of parks. To provide residents of St. Johns clean, attractive and safe parks through volunteer support. To provide safe play areas for people to meet.
How can volunteers help?
Volunteers care for their adopted parks by:
- Picking up litter/branches
- Emptying trash containers
- Removing graffiti
- Pulling weeds
- Raking weeds, leaves and fall zones
- Assisting with the park spring clean-up
- Reporting hazards
- Sweeping courts and walkways
- Assisting with City sponsored maintenance
Volunteers are required to maintain their adopted park for at least one year. Volunteers make their own schedules and must work at their park at least once a month.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS & RECOGNITION
Adopters receive:
- An official Certificate of Adoption
- An adoption sign naming the adopters to be posted at the adopted site after 15 reported hours. This will reinforce a sense of responsibility and pride on the volunteers.
- Recognition in the local newspaper.

Adult Open Basketball - Adults 18 and older will be on Monday and Wednesday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 PM at the St Johns Middle School starting January 2010. Cost is $4.00 per person per night.

Sledding Hill
Weather permitting there is an unsupervised sledding hill open to the public during daylight hours. The hill is located at the Main Park, 805 West Park Street. The hill is at the far Northwest corner of the park.

Cross Country Skiing
For those of you who like cross country skiing and don't mind making your own trails --why not try skiing the walking paths located in the woods on the West side of the Main City Park?

Ice Skating Rink
The Ice Rink is located in the Main City Park, 805 West Park Street. The rink is on the North side of the park, West of the main pavilion. Park hours are 7:00 AM - 10:30 PM. Weather permitting the rink is open for both ice skating and ice hockey. Please view the schedule below for hours exclusively for ice skating and/or ice hockey. There is a warming house at the ice rink.

The Main Park is open from 7:00 AM until 10:30 PM.
The Park is located at 701 W Park Street. The park consists of over 135 acres. The park has numerous amenities including tennis courts, softball fields, basketball courts, flying disc golf, skateboard ramp and a sand volleyball court. There are numerous hiking trails on the beautiful wooded land. The picnic facilities have both open air picnic tables and pavilions. The grills are located throughout the park. There are playgrounds throughout, as well as the Fantasy Forest. The performance shell is used for open air concerts, special events and weddings. In the summer the swimming pool is open to the public, as well as for lessons and private parties. There is a Community Building and Concession Stand in the Park.
For winter fun activities there are sledding hills and a ice skating rink with warming house.
The St Johns Public Schools track and football fields are located at the entrance of the park. The Park is adjacent to the 4-H Grounds.




Pocket Parks
The City has five (5) pocket parks located within the City limits:
Jaycee Park is located at 209 W Gibbs Street. This park is a fenced park geared for children. There is playground equipment, park benches, picnic tables and grills.
Senior Citizens' Park is located at 806 N Ottawa Street (across the street from the Jaycee Park). This park is geared for adult outdoor activities. There is a covered pavilion, picnic tables, grills, restrooms, park benches, basketball hoop and tennis courts. There is a public basketball court across the street next to the Water Department.
Kibbee Tot Park is located at 604 Kibbee Street. This park is geared for the younger children.The playground equipment is more the 'tot' size. In addition, there are park benches, picnic tables and a basketball hoop.
Oak Street Park is located at 200 E Oak. This is a small neighborhood park with playground equipment, picnic table and basketball hoop.

Water Tower Park is located on the corner of Swegles and Elm Streets. This is a fenced park with playground equipment, basketball hoop, park benches and picnic tables.

City of St Johns - Skate Park Rules
Hours of Operation: 7:00 AM - 10:30 PM -- Weather Permitting
The St Johns Skate Park is a sports facility for use by individuals of all ages. Any person suing the Skate Park must abide by the rules posted as the site. Failure to abide by these rules could result in a person being banned from using the facility. Complaint of violations should be directed to the City Offices a the number below.
Individuals using the Skate Park facility do so at their OWN RISK. It is apparent that skateboarding and skating, by their very nature, involve the possibility of serious physical injury. The City of St Johns assumes no responsibility for injuries incurred by individuals while on the skate park grounds. It is incumbent upon skate park users to use good judgment and caution while at the facility.
It is strongly encouraged that users wear PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT to avoid or minimize injury.
The Skate Park WILL NOT BE SUPERVISED by City Employees or other park personnel. Parents should supervise the use of the skate park by their children to insure safety and adherence to the rules of the facility.
THE FOLLOWING SKATE PARK RULES ARE ESTABLISHED FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY:
- SKATE AT YOUR OWN RISK
- Safety equipment recommended-non supervised court. (Your sport, Your skull, Your choice). Use of this facility may expose the skate athletes to serious injury.
- Skate within your means....be honest about your skill level.
- Skateboards, roller blades and in-line skates only.
- Bicycles, scooters and all other uses prohibited.
- Skate respectfully. This is a smoke, alcohol and drug-free facility.
- Be aware of others around you for everyone's safety. Skate in designated area.
- Be respectful of other patrons and of the park. No profanity.
- No loud or amplified music.
- No standing, sitting or hanging out on the ramps.
- No waxing the rails.
- No littering, glass containers, food or beverages on the skating surface.
- Modifications to any element or area within the skate park are not allowed.
- Mobile ramps or other skating structures of makeshift nature other than those provided by the City are prohibited.
- No destruction or defacing of public property including graffiti.
- The City of St Johns has the right to eject from the park, persons who break park rules or engage in uncontrolled skating and activities that endanger others.
- The City of St Johns has the right to close this facility without notice.
- All de-icing products such as salt are prohibited. They will damage the surface.
- THIS IS A TEMPORARY SITE. ANY MISUSE OR DESTRUCTION OF THIS SITE WILL RESULT IN THE EQUIPMENT BEING REMOVED.

Volunteer coaches and program instructors
People are encouraged to volunteer to help with all youth programs, but coaches for youth t-ball and softball are necessary for the programs to take place. Please consider giving your time to help the young children of the community. Games are non-competitive and teamwork is stressed, not winning. Please see the registration form for volunteer sign-up.
The Recreation Department is always looking for people who have unique talents. If you have a particular expertise and like to share it with other people contact us and we will be glad to work with you to set-up a program that will benefit area residents.
